An Abuja High Court is ordering the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to grant former aide to the ex-National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki bail on self-recognition. The former aide to the ex-National Security Adviser, Col. Nicholas Ashinze had filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit before the court challenging his detention by EFCC.
Ashinze through his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome alleges that he had been in the EFCC’s custody since 23 December last year for no verifiable reasons. When the matter first came up for hearing, counsel to EFCC was not in court and after listening to the argument of the applicant’s counsel the court adjourned till March 14 for ruling. On the day fixed for ruling, counsel to EFCC, John Ojogbane suddenly appears in court asking to be allowed to come into the matter in the interest of fair hearing.
But the applicant’s counsel Mike Ozekhome however opposed the EFCC’s argument describing it as an attempt to arrest the judgment of the court. After listening to both counsels, the presiding judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu dismissed EFCC’s application and went ahead to deliver judgment on Ashinze’s fundamental rights suit.
