The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have been calling on the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai to soften his policies and actions towards workers in the State. This latest action by the two union is a reaction to the Verification Form given to workers with a clause on whether they want to belong to unions or not, by the Kaduna State Government.
Addressing a large crowd of workers that have been converging on the Kaduna NLC Secretariat, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Ayuba Wabba, says no reasonable government will deny workers of their fundamental rights to belong to a union for the protection of their rights. The NLC chairman, asked Governor El-Rufai to expunge the portion of the verification form that appeared to be anti – Labour Union or face very strong labour actions that will ground the state.
Comrade Waba, maintains that no worker has right to opt out of union and enjoy minimum wage, adding that the 1948 UN Charter gives rights to workers to belong to trade union of their choice. President of the Trade Union Congress TUC, Comrade Bobboi Kaigama says enough is enough” and time has come for Nigerian government to know that workers are the owners of the land. Bobboi says the position of the TUC is that, the clause should be removed, and no workers verification done without union representatives, he’s further calling for understanding and agreement between workers, State Government and the Union.
