The Federal Capital Territory Administration is giving a One point six billion naira bailout to the six area councils in the city to meet some pressing needs. FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello presenting cheques to Chairmen of the area Councils in his office says the money is to enable them pay January and February salary arrears. But the Abuja chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees is insisting they will continue the ongoing strike action until there is proof of payment to their members.
Giving bailout to states to pay salary was one of the major decisions of the President Buhari Administration. But in spite of the bailout some States and Local Governments are still neck deep in debt. According to the FCT Minister giving bailout to the six area council in Abuja is the only way to change the ugly trend of owing workers’ salaries.
Though they now have the money, the Minister cautions the chairmen against diverting it for other uses aside that which it is provided for.
