Rail transportation has been recognised as a veritable instrument to drive Nigeria’s development. This much is been stated at the one day public hearing on the Nigerian Railway Corporation act repeal and re enactment bill 2015. Opening the hearing President of the Senate Bukola Saraki says the bill is one of the high priority bills before the National Assembly as the rail system is of paramount importance to the Nation’s economy.
The Senate at plenary on the 13th of October 2015 had deliberated extensively on the general principles of the bill and thereafter referred it to the Committee on Land Transportation for further legislative action which subsequently is holding a public hearing to discuss the way forward for the railway sector. There is a need to cross ventilate ideas on developing a rich practical and well crafted legal framework for the Nigerian Railway Corporation and indeed the entire rail value chain.
