The House of Representatives is expressing concerns about the needless deaths and wanton destruction of properties which could averted by prompt response of relevant agencies. And so in line with global best practices and as a matter of corporate social responsibility to the people it is mandating the NCC to compel as a matter of urgency major Telecoms operators in the country to introduce toll free lines for emergency purposes.
The motion was introduced by Hon. Obinna Onwubuariri, representing Onuimo/Okigwe/Isiala Mbano Federal Constituency of Imo State having observed that avoidable incidents of emergency disasters like fire outbreaks in homes and market places, armed robbery and other crimes like kidnapping, insurgency and other natural disasters happening across the country could be averted with proper emergency lines.
He notes that if the NCC makes it mandatory for major GSM Operators to introduce a toll-free short code numbers, prompt response will be made easy and possible.
