A bill for an act to amend the National Lottery Act has passed second reading in the Senate. The bill which seeks to make provisions for effective operation of lottery in Nigeria is been presented by Dino Melaye representing Kogi West. He says lottery earnings has the capacity to enrich Nigeria as billions of naira are lost annually from non remittance of government’s dues.

All over the world, lottery is a money spinner and earns governments the much needed boost of their economies. The story in Nigeria is somewhat different, despite the huge amount of people betting and the huge amounts collected by licensed operators totaling billions of naira, Nigeria hardly get earn as much as a quarter of that amount as observed by the sponsor.
