Experts on drug use, drawn from different regional organizations have enjoined ECOWAS member countries to strengthen their law enforcement agencies to check the rising cases of drug trafficking within the sub-region. Representatives of the organizations made the call in Abuja at the meeting of technical experts of the West African Epidemiology Network on Drug use.
The West African sub-region is said to be the highest transit point for illicit drugs and the experts here want the heads of states in the region to brace up to this developing phenomenon. The effect of the menace is also said to be high among the youths and that it contributes to criminal behaviour and other social vices.
According to the experts, the objectives of the meeting are to promote inter-agency collaboration, to generate strategic information for policy decision making on how to control movement of illicit drugs among the ECOWAS member states.
