The Senate has passed repealed and re-enacted Bill into Law after going through a clause by clause consideration. The Bill described as one of the most prolific in the 8th Senate is seeks to reorganize the railway corporation and bring in private public participation. Sponsor of the Bill Lagos West Senator Gbenga Ashafa says provides for the separation of the operator from the regulator taking away complete control from one agency.
He says another bill is underway that will establish a commission will regulate the entire transport sector including Marine Transportation. He assures Nigerians that the new face of the railway corporation will curtail accident, enhance commerce, open up new areas as well as create more jobs.
The new act is expected to find concurrence with the House of Representatives and quick accent by the President. The first standard gauge trains will be tested and launched next by President Muhammadu Buhari next week.
