President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated a thirty member governing council and a twelve member board of trustee for the implementation of the United Nations environment programme report on the cleanup of Ogoni Land. President Buhari charges the cleanup Committee to ensure prudence with funds that will be provided for the cleanup exercise.
The inauguration of the two implementation committees is coming two months after the flag-off of the clean up by Vice – President Yemi Osinbajo. Since the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report was released in 2011, it has been five years of procrastination, but also hard consultations on the part of government and the affected communities to reach an understanding on the way forward.
According to President Buhari it will take two decades to return the ecosystem of Ogoni and the entire Niger delta environment to its natural conditions.
