Northern Nigeria is plagued with high poverty and low literacy.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi 11, on Wednesday in Kano identified hunger and poverty as most under-developed countries’ biggest problems.

Sanusi, who spoke at the 36th Aminu Kano Annual Memorial Symposium organised by the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies at Mambayya House, said only 20 per cent of 100 people are living in poverty in the southern part of Nigeria.

According to him, the statistics account for almost 80 per cent in the North.

However, he blamed parents in Kano for the almajiri system in the city.

The monarch called on the state government to provide free education for girls in the 44 local government areas of the state.

Meanwhile, the state government has destroyed expired products valued at over N5m seized from traders.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sanitation Vanguard, Alhaji Jafar Gwarzo, who supervised the burning of the items, said some of the suspects had been convicted and serving various jail terms.
